Supplements for Pancreatitis

supplements for pancreatitis
People ask me what supplements for pancreatitis I use to keep my pancreas happy and where to get them so I'll list them here for you. You can purchase your own wherever you choose I use this source because they deliver almost anywhere and I am lazy but they are also usually cheaper in price than everyone else too which is a nice benefit and if you purchase over $25 worth  of qualified product shipping is usually free (in the USA). Now ...

The health supplements for pancreatitis I personally use are gluten free because I am a celiac so wheat, barley, rye are not acceptable in my supplements. One is a vegetarian vcap, two are regular capsules, One is in tablet form and one is a powder formula. These are NOT in order of importance. ALL are important.

1) Curcumin puts out the fire of inflammation and so helps control pain. It is also a powerful antioxidant and it also inhibits cancer growth by actually causing cancer cells to die (according to some research). I use the Vcaps and I make sure I ingest plenty of black pepper during the day (in food) to help the absorption of the curcumin. There are those who will insist that you need to buy expensive curcumin in combo with Piperine but it seems to me that plain old black pepper works the same.

Jarrow Formulas Curcumin 95, 500mg, 120 Capsules

2) Grape Seed Extract is another very strong anti-inflammatory but it is also one of the most powerful antioxidants on earth and one of the few that will cross the blood-brain barrier. According to research grape seed extract causes cancer cells to die but more importantly grape seed extract in combination with curcumin and vitamin C help relieve nausea and pain (at least they do for me) that we all know are two rotten symptoms of pancreatitis. Over time it helps heal the pancreas, at least it did mine but instead of simply taking me at my word read this second to the last sentence in a sholar type article: "supplementation of GSPE ameliorates chronic pancreatitis in humans." The word ameliorates means "to make or become better, improve." So get some and see if it works for you too.

NOW Foods Grape Seed Anti 100mg

3) Vitamin C is another antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and essential nutrient. Vitamin C can do so many things and it has done wonders for me, in combination with grape seed extract and curcumin. The three in combination are extremely powerful pancreatitis remedies. This particular formula also contains bioflavonoids and rose hips.

Now Foods, Vitamin C-500 Tabs

4) Enzymes are important simply because your pancreas produces digestive enzymes and the less your pancreas has to work the better. If your pancreas has sustained a large amount of damage it may not produce enough enzymes to digest your food and of course this makes an enzyme supplement mandatory. The enzymes I use contain pancreatin 4X which is Amylase, Lipase and Protease.

Super Enzymes Caps

5) Vitamins, Minerals and Antioxidants are important simply because with pancreatitis we can often suffer from malabsorption which simply means we do not absorb the nutrients in our food like we should. Extra vitamins, minerals and antioxidants may be very helpful in providing more energy and all-around better health. About this formula it may not be the best but if it isn't, and I have scoured the net and health stores it is very close. Most are natural vitamins/mineral from plant sources but a few are synthetic, which most of the well known multi-vitamins are and synthetic vitamins suck compared to the real thing. This formula also uses a much higher grade of B12 and B12 is important for making blood and except for one source of sea vegetation can only be gotten from animal products. That is why I use this formula. It's gluten free and of excellent quality.

Multiple Vitamins & Minerals - Fruit Antioxidant

Well, there you have them. Those are the exact formulas I use every day. You may wish to use different formulas, like I said I need to use those because they are gluten free and it is difficult to find quality, gluten free supplements. I use the ones above, I can vouch they work. The "they work" part is important. However ...

IF you decide to use another product, that is perfectly cool but make sure you do not buy grape seed or curcumin or vitamin C that is coupled with mineral or vitamins. You want your THREE supplements to be as pure as possible so that they are non-toxic in large doses. In other words you want quality, stand-alone grape seed extract and stand-alone curcumin. The vitamin C w/bioflavonoids and rose hips.

Now ...

How I take the supplements.

I take one capsule each of grape seed, curcumin and vit C in the morning when I get up, usually on an empty stomach and then have my coffee and a smoke lol. The enzymes I take just before I eat sometimes with another dose (one cap each) of grape seed, curcumin and vit C and then I take my last dose of grape seed, curcumin, vit C and the vitamin/mineral/antioxidant drink at night before bed. I only use HALF the dose on the label of the powder vitamin/mineral/antioxidant formula, one rounded teaspoon instead of a tablespoon because that is all that is needed to get a good dose of nutrients However ...

When I started with the supplements years ago when I was still quite sick I took them (grape seed extract, curcumin and vit C) 4 times per day and the grape seed extract in fairly large amounts of 200 milligrams, 4 times per day. The curcumin I was using at that time came in much smaller amounts so it comprised about 400 mgs total per day for curcumin at that time. And the vitamin C was about 5,000 milligrams per day. I've taken upto 10,000 mgs per day of vitamin C with no adverse effects but some folks get stomach cramps and diarrhea with large doses of vitamin C similar to eating to much fruit or to many green apples. So start with small doses and work up to about 4,000 - 5,000 milligrams per day.

All three are non-toxic so you can take large amounts without fear of a lethal overdose however ...

When you first start out you may experience some unpleasant effects due to the fact that those powerful pancreatitis supplements are purging your body of toxic waste so it may be prudent to start off with the minimum dose of once per day and then add another dose and then another and so on until your pain and other symptoms resolve. Then stay at a fairly strong dose until your abdomen is no longer tender and your symptoms have disappeared.

I must say this - and this is important - the supplements work however they alone did NOT do it for me. It was Supplements and MY Pancreatitis Diet in combination that worked to heal my pancreas. ONE (either one) helps but will not produce healing - at least it didn't for me. It wasn't until I learned that I NEEDED BOTH to heal that my healing began.

I also drank large amounts of grapefruit juice, probably a gallon per day, starting in 1982 which was years before I found the supplements. YES, I said a gallon. If it wasn't a gallon it was damn close to it. It was grapefruit juice that first stopped my acute pancreatitis attacks. I did NOT know that until I found research several months ago that said grapefruit protected mice from acute pancreatitis. Yes, I know we are not mice but I don't think it is simply happenstance that my acute attacks resolved once I started drinking large amounts of grapefruit juice because grapefruit juice contains OPC's which are found in larger quantities in grape seed extract.

So, get yourself the supplements, take them religiously for life (they are not a cure - there is no cure), adhere to my chronic pancreatitis diet and start healing. Of course you can do what you want but so far this regimen or whatever you want to call it has bought me some really good years I may not have had otherwise. In fact, I may have already been dead by now.

Good luck and I hope you find healing!

    2. Hi sir;

first of all thanx for the suggestion, i'll try my best for this receipt except the smoking part :)

Another question, what about sport and fitness on the other hand? I am a sport addict and this illness disabled me. It's been good 2 months since i've been eating carefully but men needs carbohydrates and protein for sportive activity. While doctor suggested me a pill called "kreon" which is the pancreas enzyme concentrate. While pancreas digests carbohydrates by it's enzymes it may work. what do you suggest?

In btw, i can eat almost anything except the food with high fat. and of course no alcohol.

    3. Carbs shouldn't hurt you, good protein sources are chicken, turkey and fish. In regards to enzymes (Creon) I wouldn't take it but you can do as you see fit. I have already mentioned what I personally take for enzymes above in my post. Good luck to ya, I hope you stay well!

    1. Hi Rohit, please re-read the above post. I explain how I take all the supplements. I don't like to repeat myself.

One thing I will say is you may need to take more than me. Experiment with dosage and how many times per day until you find the amounts that work for you.

You may need 2 - 3 times more than me.

One guy I know takes a LOT more grape seed extract and curcumin than me.

Find what works for you. Hang in there man, it definitely sounds like you have had an unpleasant 3 years. I hope you find healing

  3. wow, i feel so blessed that i found your blog today. i actually had to take a break to go to my appt w/my GI dr. he agreed to do the ERCP. i have sphincter stenosis. your description is so on target. i tell people that when i am having an acute attack it feels like Edward Scissorhands is in my belly scraping and it feels like grinding. truly wretched. i'm a bit bummed about having to drink tons of grapefruit juice, ick :( are there pills that can replace the drinking of this juice? as for the creon, i also didn't like it. it didn't do anything positive. in regards to the curcumin + grape seed extract, are those available at like vitamin shops? i don't suppose they'd be at a pharmacy, like CVS or whatnot. i'm going to get some asap! i can't thank you enough! i've lost 20 lbs in less than 2 months. i miss eating. also, for me, it varies. i had pineapple chunks one night and was crying in pain w/in 15 minutes! i had to take 4 extra pain pills (my usual alotted dose is, 1 tablet of Oxycodone (Percocet w/out the tylenol)- 15 mg every 4-6 hrs. the next week i was able to eat tons of pineapple and was just fine. i also ate a large bowl of strawberry yogurt and was doubled over w/in 10 minutes!! then other times i can eat the same exact thing and be fine. that's about all i've been eating lately is fruit and yogurt. plus i live in ginger ale. it helps with the nausea. i too am a smoker, and as the stress rises, so does the amount of butts i smoke. i know i should quit, i have Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, which means when i was 15 and didn't smoke i already had emphysema. oh dear, i'm rambling, for that i apologize. if i read back to your older posts does it tell what your special diet is? i want to thank you so much, you're a blessing.

    1. LOL you don't like grapefruit juice?. I love the stuff in fact I started drinking it again since I have mentioned it on this blog and sometimes I just drink a lot of it lol. Anyway ...

Since you don't like it I am sure you can get grapefruit seed extract and do as well. You can read and learn about grapefruit seed extract here: http://www.squidoo.com/grapefruit-seed-extract-for-pancreatitis

Faerya, you can get any of the supplements I recommend at any well stocked health store, even Fred Myers carries most of them in some brand or another. Just make sure that the vit C, grape seed and curcumin are pure (nothing but the stand alone ingredient) and in the case of grape seed at least 85% proanthocyanidin, 95% is best. Same with curcumin 95% curcuminoid.

Have you done a food diary yet? Pineapple shouldn't be a trigger (not saying it is impossible, just not likely) and could have actually been something eaten previously but yogurt is usually to much fat content and the live bugs in yogurt could (according to research) contribute to necrotizing pancreatitis IF you were to have an acute attack right after eating it.

Yes, my older posts explain diet and how to do a food diary correctly.

Good luck and feel free to ask questions. I hope you feel better soon :-)

  4. Loved reading this post and others, thanks a lot for sharing. I am a senior who has several health problems, which doctors never take care of properly, and now I use supplements and research a lot about different conditions, supplements, and stay away from processed food . I can very well imagine your pain and suffering. Health awareness and keeping track of ones health is very important part of life both parents and schools must include this in the development of everyone. Thanks again for sharing.

  5. Thank you for dedicating so much time to this blog that helps sufferers like us. I am a little bit frustrated by the modern medicine to say the least.
In August 2011 I lost consciousness and I felt a huge pain in the abdomen, after a few minutes, the pain calmed down.
I have 2 little kids so I did not pay much attention. After a few months of pain in the abdominal area (a horizontal line) and nausea I went to the doctor who performed a routine test and my lipase was high (60 was the highest range, I was at 72).
My doctor talked to me so easily about pancreatic cancer. I was so damn scared that before having an MRI done I lost plenty of weight.
Something that might have started all these was a lot of stress...I had my little daughter in the NICU for 3 days, subject to all kind of invasive procedures for nothing - and I knew it. I left the hospital 10 hours after giving birth to follow her to a superior level NICU. Anyways, the doctor recommended a CT scan and I did not want one as I am only 35 yo and I am in a very sensitive percentage of having complications after so much radiation.
I had an MRCP done (no contrast substance as I was breasfeeding) that did not show anything.
Since then, I moved to Seattle and had several other tests done that all showed high lipase level - but in decent ranges. None of my doctors does not seem concern (actually my primary physician talked again about pancreatic cancer and sent me to a gastroenterologist). My GI had a good approach, we needed to eliminate the causes one by one. A endoscopy showed I had HPylori, took the damn complicated dose of antibiotics, had small intestine bacteria overgrowth, killed them with an antibiotic etc.
Now, after killing all the bad guys, I think I also killed my all good flora. after all the treatments my nausea came back, not to mention my lipase level is high (300 max. I have 370).
My stool analysis showed fat when I was on a decently fat free diet. Some days, I have even noticed that some foods would be eliminated almost the same way they were ingested, but that was during my antibiotic treatment.
I was a very irritable person, I would argue with everybody and I could not get along with anybody. I was really thinking of some anti depressives, but God forbids I haven't taken any.
My naturopath told me I might have mild pancreatitis and now the GI wants the results of my MRCP to think of a diagnostic. Meanwhile, I stress like crazy (I have 2 little daughters and I want to see them grow) and I know that the pancreas doesn't pardon you.
I also suspect I might have gall stones (I come from a country where everybody I know has gallstones), no ultrasound showed anything, but I begin to doubt the interpreters and the technicians.
I would really owe you my life if you could tell me what kind of tests I should do and where either in my area or anywhere in the world - I can afford to travel to have a certitude as the unknown kills me.
I would like to know what was the procedure that showed something for you and that is less invasive and who discovered what you had. I would go to the end of the world to find that specialist who was able to detect the issues you have (or did you self diagnosed? :).
We think similarly in that we should not get our doctors and insurances rich by doing 100 procedures that are not going to show anything while you are dying little by little. My GI prescribed some new medication for IBS and he scheduled me for a colonoscopy.
Meanwhile, I have purchased all the supplements you recommend, the only thing is that if I have gallstones as I suspect I might, I need to go slowly on the curcumin.
Thank you in advance for your help and once again for your time. AND a Happy New Year to you with lots of health and joy.

    1. Hi Ella, I understand your frustration. Gallstones are pretty easy to diagnose, ultra sound usually shows them if present. I'm not saying they can't be missed but they usually show up if there are any.

For pancreatitis the two primary tests are p-amylase and lipase. Both are pancreas specific. However unless you have CP neither may be elevated except during an acute pancreatitis attack. Lipase usually increases first. In order to meet the AP criteria I believe the levels have to be 3 times normal high. Just who came up with that brilliant criteria I have no clue. I mean why would p-amylase or lipase increase if there weren't damage to the pancreas?

Next when appropriate a CT, US, EUS or MRCP. But if you do NOT have pancreatitis those tests may show absolutely nothing. Any hospital in Seattle should be able to do them I would think.

Now this may be off the wall but you may want to see a doctor who specializes in autoimmune disease or at least have your primary check for common AID's because some can cause autoimmune pancreatitis which often LOOKS and ACTS like pancreatic cancer.

Both pancreatic cancer and autoimmune pancreatitis show increased levels of antibodies called IgG4 and so another blood test - IF - your primary is worried about panc cancer is to check levels of IgG4 - but - like I said autoimmune pancreatitis increases IgG4 also and can LOOK like pancreatic cancer on CT.

Since your fecal test showed stool fat you could have malabsortion problems which can occur in chronic pancreatitis, cancer, IBS and autoimmune diseases such as celiac disease and chron's.

Diagnosis isn't always easy because so many digestive diseases have similar symptoms. And ...

I can not diagnose. I'm not a doc.

Good luck to you Ella, keep at it til you find out what is wrong.

      Delete
  6. Thank you so much for your response. You said that the docs had a difficult time diagnosing your pancreatitis. what was THE TEST that showed yours? As I mentioned my lipase level were never too high (which is even more scary, as it sends me to the autoimmune pancreatitis option, which is a "bad option to say the least.") My doc recommends a MRCP with contrast and a colonoscopy (I want to rule out Chron's), as well as the ultrasound (should show the gallstones), the whole package :) I don't know how I find the courage to smile. So thank you for your insights.
Another thing, no matter what the medical findings will be I do not think I am going to go with the procedures they recommend or with filling my body with toxic medecine, so I might just go with your diet and then see if there are some improvements. You say that your blood tests show normal ranges now? is this true? Is it possible that your pancreas heals so it begins to function normally again?
Now, a little bit out of subject, I have 2 questions as I do not know how to obtain so much grapefruit juice you mention in another blog, I suppose I need a juicer. Do you know a good one that would also keep the antioxidant properties of the fruit in place?
Second, do you take grapefruit extract and what brand, could you send me to the one you use?
Once again thank you for keeping us informed about the latest natural remedies available for this condition.
Good luck to you and stay healthy!

    1. Hi Ella - No I didn't say the docs had a difficult time diagnosing me and my pancreatitis. I said that they (13 out of 14) were to stupid to recognize the signs and symptoms. 13 had NO CLUE. They were dummber than a bag of barber hair.

#14 was way more intelligent, listened and was able to add 2+2 and get 4 instead of 22. He put me into an attack using morphine and prostigmine. He then drew my enzyme levels and at about hour 4 - 5 they rapidly elevated. That attack wasn't even one of the bad ones but he said my levels went HIGH. Then I had a CT and endoscopy.

In regards to your thoughts on autoimmune pancreatitis, all pancreatitis is bad, however, at least AIP responds significantly to steroids such as prednisone where other types do not. That may or may not be a good thing. Good if a doctor even recognizes it - good luck with that.

Last time my enzyme levels were checked (I actually have a decent to good doc who can think on his feet and has my old records with the panc diagnosis) yes, they were within normal limits and it turned out i also have celiac disease - he thought to test me and viola - I came back with positive antibodies IgG and IgA. So at age 55 someone figured out that I also had a gluten challenge that i had most likely been living with for most of my life, undiagnosed and uncontrolled.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the panc can heal allowing people to lead a fairly normal life as long as they adhere to a proper pancreatitis diet and take supplements, both seem to work together to keep the inflammation at bay but I know it is NOT a cure. In other words it's a lifetime thing and if one goes off the diet and supplements they could end up having more problems. I found that out the hard way.

White, unsweetened, grapefruit juice can be purchased at any store - Safeway for example.

Any good, quality juicer should be fine.

NutriBiotic makes grapefruit seed extract. Personally I just drink the juice cuz it also contains other flavonoids, vitamins and minerals that are beneficial.

You are welcome Ella, hope you get well. Good luck to you :-)

    1. By all means give them a try Kathy but remember it takes BOTH a strict pancreatitis diet AND the supplements not just one or the other. Don't think you can take the supplements and eat bad foods (fat and alcohol) and heal - that does NOT work.
