I really enjoy receiving quality comments and questions on this blog about living with and overcoming Pancreatitis. If you have questions or comments regarding your acute pancreatitis or chronic disease please feel free to share. Your experience with acute or chronic pancreatitis may help someone else or you may give me a good pancreatitis subject to write about :-)
I have a comment below I am going to answer here in a post because if I'd have published it in the regular manner my reader's email address would have been available for anyone who might want to spam her. Please comment, ask questions but don't put personal info (email, phone, etc.) in your comments or questions. And asking questions or making comments is NEVER a "bother" to me. So do NOT feel that way at all. If I can help you feel better, lessen your pain maybe even help you heal your damaged pancreas from chronic or acute pancreatitis, via any of my personal experience, I am more than happy to do so.
Ok, let's get to the comment.
"Hi. My name's Julie and I left a comment a couple or few weeks ago including my email address and you responded via my email address. My email is so full of junk that I thought I'd ask you a question this way instead of searching for that email. I was wondering if you ever recommend any certain nuts/seeds. I love sesame sticks and was eating them but not sure if they were affecting me or not. I love nuts but know they have fat and not sure what I should try if I put some in a rice recipe. And then I saw a recipe including sunflower seeds. I also wonder if the instant oatmeal packets are ok. I was eating a lot of the cinnamon oatmeal and didn't know if that was affecting me. I guess I'm just so afraid to get sick again and was wondering if you had any insight on any of this. I know I need to add one thing at a time and then wait 48 hours. I did that lastnight with turkey breast. So far so good. I'm new at this and sorry if I'm bothering you. I really really appreciate all you've posted and wish you had a book with all the info in it. I'm planning on printing a lot of your articles and keeping them in a notebook to make things easier. Thank you so much for whatever you can tell me. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks again :)"
My answer:
Hi Julie ...
From the sounds of things you are feeling better - that is great! I hope the New Year is kind to you and your pancreatitis symptoms remain a memory.
Just as you already know and mentioned seeds such as sunflower and nuts all contain natural oils and fat. You may or may not be able to tolerate the fat content. If you have been well for 6 months (no pancreatitis symptoms) and want to try eating some seeds and nuts I would suggest going with SMALL amounts. You may want to hold off using nuts and sunflower seeds in cooking and simply try some alone first and see how they work for you.
Instant oatmeal shouldn't be a problem. If you eat it plain. If you eat it with milk or worse, cream, you may have problems due to fat from the milk or cream.
The 48 hour thing is for fruits, vegetables and other non animal or non dairy products. Any type of animal or dairy product should be given a weeks surveillance, even 10 days to see what the affects are going to be because it takes upto 2 weeks to digest animal type proteins. And for some reason many foods that trigger instant pancreatitis pain and symptoms one day will maybe take a week to do the same next time or visa-versa.
In ALL cases of MY pain and nausea, the culprits are ALWAYS foods that contain FAT or ALCOHOL. I made myself sick one time eating oatmeal and that is how I found out that vanilla extract just doesn't work. I used to add vanilla into my oatmeal for flavor, I don't do that anymore.
If you like chocolate be advised that most chocolate manufacturers use VANILLA. Chocolate also contains FAT. It may be a source of unwanted pain so tread lightly.
If anyone has some questions that need answers be sure to ask me.
Overcoming Pancreatitis is vastly different than other pancreatitis blogs. I discovered that a strict pacreatitis diet and certain supplements eliminate the inflammation and help healing begin. I am sharing exactly what I do so that you too can begin Overcoming Pancreatitis.

You're site is so full of hope. I have read so many sites on pancreatitis looking up information and stories on others and find myself so depressed after doing so. There is so much pain and sadness in everyone's lives that have this disease that it breaks my heart. I refuse to become a victim and want to be a survivor and find myself sticking to your site only. I believe we need to stay positive in our fight for our health and so I want to thank you again. God bless!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the kind words! I am glad you find hopefilled posibilities here at this blog and you are most definitely welcome. Hopefully you will find healing from your pancreatitis as well because unless you've suffered tremendous damage I believe there is hope, hope to heal, hope to live, hope to spread around to those who like us have or still are suffering due to pancreatitis.
ReplyDeleteHi Health Guy. This is Julie that asked the question you responded to. I just found your response via a google search for another question very similar! I am so computer illiterate that I wasn't sure where I asked you this question and just figured you hadn't responded. I've got so much to learn about pancreatitis AND computers!!! Thank you so so much for your response. God led me right to it through a google search. Awesome how He does those things. I am in the process of printing some of your material. I do have a couple more questions and hopefully it's ok to ask them here. Maybe I'll be able to find the response this time :) I can't remember if you have ever mentioned taking pancreatic enzymes. I have been taking some over the counter and just learned yesterday that it might be better to take the ones that are either plant based or are enteric-coated. The ones I have may be doing me no good. Also, you say to be vegan for 6 months until you are symptom-free. But what about nausea? I think you still have some nausea? Or am I wrong? For some reason it seems my pain has gotten better but the nausea hasn't yet.
ReplyDeleteHi Julie I am glad you found my reponse and YES! God and Jesus are AMAZING! Pancreatic enzymes are very important and I take a product by Now Foods called "Super Enzymes." They are very good.
ReplyDeleteGoing vegan for at least 6 months is probably one of the best things one who suffers from pancreatitis can do. That along with the grape seed extract, vit C, curcumin and enzymes is what will help to heal you.
I still get nausea from time to time and I can ALWAYS trace it to something I have eaten such as peanut butter or something with to much oil used in the recipie (cookies, corn bread, etc...). Nausea is MY warning to mind my P's and Q's. Unfortunately I am weak at times and fall prey to my cravings. It usually ends up with me feeling not to hot for a day or two. Nothing BAD, just not GOOD.
Julie, your nausea may hang on for quite some time. Until your abdomen is no longer tender to the touch. (Probe around if it hurts you are still not healed enough). I am good unless I eat to much or I eat something I should not eat. It is ALWAYS my fault one way or the other.
This is the best place (the comment section of this pancreatitis blog) to ask me questions. I don't always check it daily but you will usually hear from me within 72 hours.
Thank you for visiting and participating!
I've been reading your whole blog today & have decided to put my 16 yr old daughter on the supplements & diet. She has been sick off & on for yrs & for the past 2 yrs has missed quite a bit of school cuz of her "stomach aches." We thought it was kidney probs for a while. Finally this past summer it got so bad that she was in tears off & on. By the end of Aug it was constant & never let up. We had all the tests run, endoscopy (which showed that she had severe gastritis,) colonoscopy (after finding blood in her stool,) ultrasounds, hida scan (which showed enlarged bile ducts.) My pcp thought it could perhaps be Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction. She was in such severe pain but mostly in the left upper quadrant. The dr decided she needed her gallbladder out & we felt that we had no other choice since we had been in the ER several times for the pain. After the surgery she had no relief in the pain. I started doing a lot of reading about SOD & knew that was her prob. I found out that there were only 6 places in the US that performed the tests she needed to have done so off we went to Florida to have a manometry, ERCP & since her pressure was very high they did a sphincterotomy. She was in the hospital for about a week & had some pain relief from that but now, after a month & a half, she is back in pain again, mostly on the left side & in the upper middle & into her back. She hardly ever sleeps since the pain is so bad again. I am starting her on you diet now with hopes that this will be the answer. She also has endometriosis which makes things so much worse. Thanks so much for posting this:)
ReplyDeleteHi Mindylou, you must be biting your nails at times. I know how frustrating this whole thing can be. Hang in there. The last symptoms you related since the manometry, ERCP and sphincterotomy sound more inline with pancreatitis but I am no doc so I obviously could be wrong. Anyway ...
DeleteSOD also causes pancreatitis and so does ERCP and certain surgical procedures within the area called the biliary tree.
I would THINK (just my thoughts) that the diet I use and supplements may help because they relieve inflammation. IF ...
It were me personally with the pain I'd not eat period, drink grapefruit juice, take Ibuprofen (antiinflammatory about 600 - 800 mgs), and take grape seed, vit C and curcumin 3 - 4 times per day to eliminate the inflammation and hopefully stop the pain. That is what I'd do, not saying it is what should be done.
I hope you daughter gets relief and feels better soon.
My pain started one year ago and continually got worse. I was finally diagnosed with Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction and had an ERCP at the University of Minnesota a few months later. Since having the ERCP, my symptoms have gotten much worse and found out that part of my pancreas is atrophied. I am alarmed by the mounting symptoms and am now on Creon. I am wondering if the ERCP exasperated my pancreas symptoms and caused the atrophy. I suffer more and more each day. I did not realize how many actually have this affliction as it took me months to find a diagnosis, where most doctors told me there was nothing wrong with me. I am extremely frightened and do not understand the outcome and where this will lead in the future.
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous, 11% of people who have ERCP experience more problems after the procedure according to stats. Whether or not you were one of the lucky 11% who knows? How was the atrophy of the pancreas found via ERCP or another test like CT after awhile?
DeleteMany people suffer with SOD and it causes acute pancreatitis in many of those folks which of course ends up damaging the pancreas.
Doctors have a bad habit of never finding the problem but they charge for service anyway. I personally think they should be on a different pay plan such as if they don't succeed in finding the correct diagnosis and treatment they should not be allowed to bill for payment. No performance, no pay. Works for me. I bet the cost of healthcare would go down dramatically.
I can't tell you where your SOD may lead you. I understand your fear, the unknown can be scary.
What I do know leads me to believe that diet and two supplements (grape seed extract and vit C) may be of benefit, especially to your pancreas.
Since you pancreas has sustained damage a very low fat or no fat diet may be extremely beneficial just as it is in pancreatitis.
Dear HG,
ReplyDeleteHave not been formally diagnosed yet, but pretty sure CP is now my lifelong companion. Thanks for all your helpful and hopeful info. It is the best and most encouraging I have found. Quick queston: Is Stevia ok to use as a sweetner?
B
Hi B - Stevia should be ok. I have never used it but supposedly it is natural which doesn't necessarily mean safe but at least it hasn't been shown to be a cancer causing agent.
DeletePersonally, unless you are diabetic, I'd use honey or molasses for sweetners and I do because they both have nutrients where other sweetners do not and everything we are able to eat should count for nutrition.
I just came across your site and want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for setting up this blog. I'm overwhelmed by pain at the moment so little is registering. But I'll be back.
ReplyDeleteThe pancreatitis is the newest of all my medical problems. I've been ill for 38 yrs with other problems, progressively getting sicker each year, now even almost every month. I can't put my thoughts together because of the pain, but I'm so glad I have somewhere to turn to now. Thank you so very much!
Hi Irene, you're welcome for the info I hope you can find that it helps because obviously you are not feeling well. I hope you find relief.
