I never seem to get everything in one post! So here are more Pancreatitis Diet tips you can use to stay pain free.
First of all in my post - Pancreatitis Diet - I was talking about foods that are at least somewhat safe to eat and those that should never be included in a Pancreatitis diet.
I forgot to mention some foods that should not be eaten so before I get to the tips which are more about cooking and preparing your food than what not to eat let's get what I forgot to mention out of the way.
Broths - beef, pork, lamb, chicken and turkey broths are a no-no's. Broths contain the fat and fat is one of the big pancreatitis triggers.
If you are recovering from acute pancreatitis cold water, oily fish is also out. I know I had them on the somewhat safe list because they contain tons of protien, fish oil, vitamins and minerals.
They are also the best source of vitamin B12 for pancreatitis victims but they contain to much oily fat, yes it is good fat, but it doesn't work out well if your pancreas has not been healed by using grapeseed and curcumin extract for at least 6 months while on a strict vegan diet. In fact ...
NOTHING will work well if you do not completely change the way you eat and go completely vegan while taking vit C, grapeseed and curcumin for at least 6 months. So be advised ...
If you enjoy pain, nausea, vomiting and various other symptoms along with the potential of more damage due to acute pancreatitis then by all means do exactly as you have been doing, eat whatever you please and disregard everything I say.
Once your pancreas has had a chance to heal you can then begin to add some chicken, turkery and white meat fish (pallock, halibut, orange roughy, perch, bass, crappie etc...) into your diet and see how it works.
DO NOT stop taking the vit C, grapeseed and curcumin.
Cook everything WITHOUT oil or grease.
NO FAT is to be added for cooking. If stuff sticks to pans, live with it. No Pam cooking spray either. Poaching fish is an easy way to cook without oil or grease.
Cooking chicken and turkey. Cut all skin and fat from the meat before cooking. If you bake the chicken or turkey use a tray in your baking dish so that the meat sits UP out of the grease and fat.
Boiling chicken and turky is best.
Boil it for 30 minutes and then drain it (yes you need to drain all that fat off). Refill the pot with water and throw (ok gently plop) the meat back into the pot and continue boiling until it is done.
If you want to make soup then of course cut it up before adding it back into the pot along with whatever else you might want to add (vegetables and spices only).
If you are baking the meat DO NOT add vegetables to the baking dish. They will sit in the fat, cook and absorb the fat. And after all your hard work and efort to do things right you will still get sick and wonder why.
Are you paying attention?
Leave a comment and let me know you're alive!
Hi Paul - I'm Simon Conabeer's better half (your greatest fan!) - we are being totally strict with your recommended diet and I just wondered if you could share any receipes or particular meals you eat as I am keen for him to gain/maintain weight whilst ensuring we stick to the diet. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Michelle! Thanks for the kind words!
ReplyDeleteNow about recipes ...
I am sorely lacking in that regard because I am NOT what you'd call a chef so I really don't have recipes per se I simply bake or bbq chicken turkey, fish in such a manner that I don't need to use oil and keep the meat from cooking in its own fat.
Chicken, baked potato (no butter or margarine, sour cream or bacon bits) and steamed broccoli (brussel sprouts, carrots, peas, spinach are all great too).
I use garlic, ginger, basil, parsley, onion, chives, turmeric, lemon juice, worchester sauce, salt and pepper to add flavor to foods (depending on what it is).
I eat a lot of fish (trout, salmon and canned sardines) because it contains tons of healthy B vitamins, fish oil and in the case of canned sardines ( I make sandwiches with lettuce, onion, tomato and mustard) you can eat the soft bones which is a great source of calcium.
Canned pink salmon is great too, especially if you happen to like salmon patties (which I do) just don't cook them with oil, use a non-stick pan. I simply put a can of salmon in a bowl, add one egg, some cooked brown rice (to hold it together), some finely chopped onion, fresh garlic, salt and pepper and away we go!
I also love meat loaf so to have something similar (without beef or pork) I used ground turkey, add an egg, some pre-cooked brown rice, (saltine crackers work better in the turkey meat loaf and salmon patties but I can't have wheat and brown rice is a lot more healthy anyway), worcheter, garlic, onions, salt and pepper and bake it and along with a tater (boiled, baked) and some veggies I am good to go.
Actually Michelle, you can take almost any good cook book and substitute chicken and turkey when the recipe says beef or pork or lamb and come out with something similar that tastes fairly decent. Home made chili is great with ground turkey instead of hamburger.
I know I am not much help in the recipe dept. but in all honesty - I wing it most of the time and sometimes it's good and sometimes my dog won't eat it! lol
Oh and any canned fish I buy, salmon, makerel, sardines, tuna, etc ... I always get that which is canned in water NOT oil.
ReplyDeleteHi-
ReplyDeleteI finally am pain free after two and a half weeks of severe pain but I feel exhausted. Will I always be so tired?
Hopefully no. Hopefully you won't have any more pain and eventually heal which will inturn enable you to realize an increase in energy as well. Pancreatitis pain really exhausts a body, it drains you and of course takes time to recover. If you are contniually in pain and sick there is never the time needed in order to recover and so that is another benefit of eliminating the AP/CP pain is the ability to recover and regain energy.
ReplyDeleteWhat has enabled you to become pain free in two and a half weeks? Others who suffer may benefit from your story. And ...
I hope you continue to enjoy freedom from the pain and sickness of pancreatitis.
I have followed your suggestions-NO FAT and the grapeseed extract, curcumin and vitamin c. In addition, I take creon before I eat. I just feel very tired. I'm Kelli, by the way.
ReplyDeleteHi Kelli, thank you for visiting. I hope you find relief from pain along with an improvement in health eventually. Over time you should begin to feel better along with an increase in energy. Hang in there lady you can win :-)
ReplyDeleteHi health guy,
ReplyDeleteFound your site very useful and comprehensive, thanks.
One thing I would really like to see on your site is third party confirmation about your condition. I appreciate your advise, but then the skeptic in me says - i need to know you and your diagnosis are genuine.
Can you help an old skeptic?
Regards

Hi skeptical - I understand your skepticism and I too have a request. Why don't you go ahead and place your private info online so that millions of people can view it so that I might be able to conclude that you are truly human? How's that? We good to go? Oh and here's an idea ...
ReplyDeleteFeel free to NOT believe a damn word I say. I really could care less.
Thanks for your reply.
ReplyDeleteThought you would appreciate the difficulty I (possibly others) have knowing when to trust a web site. I have read copious web sites with content from authors who clearly publish nonsense which could be harmful. on the other hand, I have been struck by the sense of your thinking and the huge efforts/time and investment you make in your site.
Hope you don't mind, but think I will maintain my skeptical outlook and carry on following your diet ideas?
Yours (in pain and nausea)

A man with common sense would know from experience when something is genuine or not. I'm brand new to this site and this is it as far as I'm concerned from personal experience, knowledge and common sense. I know I'v found the best guide so far. Much better than the emergency discharge, 'go home there nothing you can do...'

Hi, my nightmare has recently started, actually over a year ago, and due to mis-diagnosis(pain down to wind) I've had severe nausea and discomfort, which over the year has got gradually worse. Lost a lot of weight. I had my gall bladder( hoping things would improve) out in Dec 2011 and okay for a week and down hill since. Couldn't eat for 3 weeks, my Dr wouldn't put me hospital , even though I was in such a mess. I couldn't even drink water without wanting to be sick. Had to throw myself on the mercy of the surgeon who took the gb out.I was admitted to his hospital and given fluids etc. I was put on Creon and all seemed okay but have started feeling sick recently. So back to square one. I'm very grateful for your blog and my partner has just read it and can see the help and useful info on the site. I am going to try the curcumin and grapeseed extract. It is really very scary and feeling out of control is horrible. Today I saw a woman riding a bike, she looked so fit and healthy it made me cry. Can't even go out for a walk. Will I ever be back to 100% health?I hope so.
ReplyDeleteI am saddened to here that you have joined the ranks with those of us who have or still are suffering from pancreatitis. I know your pain. I wish I could give you a definite "Yes you will recover 100%" but I can not do that. I'd be lying and I just don't do that. I have no intention of giving false hope because even though I have been mostly pain free for many years I still don't feel 100%. I still get nauseated from time to time, have malabsorption problems and sometimes I just feel tired as hell but ...
ReplyDeleteI also have had uncontrolled Celiac Disease for YEARS because nobody caught it until about two years ago. So that may have a dramatic impact upon my health you may not have to contend with. I can probably predict some dramatic increase in your health as long as you change your diet, and consume vit C, grape seed extract and curcumin but to tell you you will be 100% and live a normal life is not being realistic when your pancreas has been damaged due to pancreatitis. I wish I could tell you what you want to hear but I can't.
Dear health guy,
ReplyDeleteIm very grateful for your blog. My story is vey long and long, but the short version is that I had to have radiation on my brain almost 4 years ago. Unfornatantly I was over radiated. I developed a lot of health probalems including chronic pacreantits. I'm currantly on steroids due to my brain still being swollen. This makes my pancreas not happy. I've been in and out if hospitals for the past 31/2 years. I've been hooked up to feeding tubes, morphine drips, blood transfusions and now I've been vegetarian for 2 years almost. Ifor 2 years I ate basically nothing, no fat. Now I eat very clean, no processed foods. Oh, I too have celiacs. Had it forever. Was born with it. So I eat no wheat, no meat, no caffeine , no alcohol. I eat no surger except fruit, no bad fat EVER. And yet I'm still in pain every time I eat. My pancreas use to be covered with cysts from the head to the tail. I had a huge cyst wrapped around my spleen and a cysts on my liver. But now their gone, but my doc says I'm scarred badly. My question to you is will it ever stop? I tried fish tonight and it killed me. It 5:30am and I'm hurting so bad I can't sleep. What cani do to help it. I mean it is better, and I've been out of hospital for 7 mo now, which is the longest I've ever been out. Do you think your plan would work for me, seeingg that I'm on steroids?
I'm sorry to bother you and my rambling, Im just so tired of it all and I just want to know there is maybe an end to this some hope. It seems to have worked for you. And that gives me hope. Ido take enzymes and that seems to help.
Sorry about the spelling, my iPad won't let me fix my mistakes.
Thank you
Hi - your story sounds familiar. I mean really familiar, not about me but about someone else I know and she is one trooper I'll tell ya.
DeleteI can't tell you that what I do will help you. It may help the chronic pancreatitis but as for the other problems I have no clue, but I can not see it hurting you. However ...
In regards to adding grape seed, curcumin, vit C, grapefruit juice and an quality multi vitamin-mineral formula you should ask your pharmacist if any of those things will interact with any medication you are now taking. Your pharamcist will most likely know more than your doc in that regard. If your pharmacist gives you the green light you should be good to go but if you are on a ton of meds I'd still proceed with caution and note any weird results (other than feeling better). Now ...
Let's talk diet.
You said you were vegetarian but that is different than vegan. A true vegan will not eat any type of animal product, that includes dairy. However, vegans do cook with oil and that is fat so you'd need to avoid oil in prep and cooking.
You may want to try a completely vegan (using no oil) diet with the supplements and grapefruit juice (if you can have them) and see what transpires over a 6 month duration of continuous usage. Naturally if you feel better it must be doing something good.
Since you have celiac disease I would hope you are on a gluten free diet. If you are having symptoms of celiac disease still after a year of being gluten free you may want to look at corn and oats. About 36% of celiacs also experience a "gluten type" response from corn and another 1% can not tolerate oats - even if they are certified gluten free. I am one of those who fit both categories. Once I eliminated corn most of my symptoms disappeared but then gluten free oats were still causing a response.
You are aware (I hope) of all the places gluten hides in products and of the cross-contamination problems of products that have zero gluten but are processed in facilities that also process wheat, barley and rye products are you not?
Celiac disease is one huge pain in the butt and having panc with it is really a pain but that's life and it can suck at times.
I know you are wanting to hear me tell you you'll be cured in no time but I can't do that. You have had a tremendous amount of damage and that damage may never be repaired or healed but it may improve to some extent and it sounds like any type of improvement would be welcome. You also have other stuff that may be connected to celiac disease that may or may not be improved. It all depends on how long you went undiagnosed and how fast and how well you went after controlling it once you were diagnosed but I can tell you this ...
For some reason vit C is nice doses of 1000 mgs or more seems to help celiacs. Nobody seems to know why but I am gonna guess it must be due to the anti-inflammatory capabilities of vit C and I can't help but believe that the grape seed extract and curcumin are probably helpful as well for help in healing the small intestines.
If you have more questions ask. If I didn't answer your questions well enough tell me and let me know what i didn't touch upon because sometimes I ramble and forget stuff and sometimes I just ain't to clear lol
