Pancreatitis Pain: The 4 Steps You Need to Take Immediately

Pancreatitis pain should be a HUGE signal for those of you who suffer from pancreatitis. When you feel the first symptoms of an attack of acute pancreatitis there are 4 steps you should to take immediately.

The reason these 4 steps are critically important is: You need to save your pancreas from further damage as quickly as possible. Remember I am NOT a doctor and I can NOT legally prescribe (tell YOU what to take or how much) a course of action but ...

Here's what I do:

1) I take a large dose of an anti-inflammatory medicine. Ibuprofen (advil, motrin) or I now prefer aspirin (1300mgs). The reason I prefer aspirin is it is less dangerous (doesn't cause heart attack like other NSAID's) and it thins the blood platelets so that there is less risk of a blood clot should I experience an arrhythmia (rapid heart rate) which is a symptom of acute pancreatitis.

2) I take 100 - 200 mgs of grape seed extract

3) I take 500 mgs of curcumin

My symptoms usually resolve within 90 minutes using this regemin however ...

4) If my symptoms do NOT resolve within 90 minutes I get my ass into the hospital but before I leave I take another 650mgs of aspirin, 100mgs more grape seed extract and another 500mgs of curcumin.

I either go by ambulance (preferred) in which case I'll tell the EMT's how much of the meds I have taken or have someone else drive me cuz it is difficult to drive while in massive pain, vomiting or both.

If someone drives I make sure when I arrive at the hospital that I tell the ER doc exactly how much aspirin, grapeseed and curcumin I have taken.

(I have NOT been to the ER in 16 years since I began using my regemin.)

Like I said, the first 3 steps of my regemin usually stop an attack within 90 minutes and that's my goal. To neutralize the inflammation and STOP the attack in 90 minutes or less and avoid further damage to my pancreas.

The longer the attack lasts the more chance of irreparable damge.

Some of you may be thinking: "that's a lot of aspirin, grape seed extract and curcumin. What if I start to bleed because of the aspirin?

Or

"Will that much aspirin kill me?"

No that much aspirin won't kill you.

I have already asked my doctor what the LD50 is for aspirin and then I looked it up myself to be sure.

The only valid threat I can see would be if - due to your pancreatitis attack you begin to bleed internally. That is why I am going to tell the ER doc how much of each med I took so that they can be aware of any potential risks if I do begin to bleed.

So I write down exactly how much of each med I have taken so that in the event I need to transport my ass to the hospital I can give it to the EMT's or my driver so they have the information up front should I go into shock. By the way if you didn't know, you can go into shock during an acute pancreatitis attack.

That is another reason to stop the attack of pancreatitis as soon as possible because you can die from shock.

Just a last note:

I have taken up to 2600mgs of asprin (that's a lot at one time), 800mgs of grapeseed and 1000mgs of curcumin within an hour or less along with 40mgs of compazine (to get the nausea and vomiting under control), and 50mgs of phenergan suppositories (nausea med). I've taken all of those meds in those dosages together (or very close together) and I ain't dead yet but who knows what could happen? However, time is of the essence and I do what ever it takes to get the attack resolved.

I think and dose myself this way because if I don't get resolution the damage may turn into necrosis, pseudocysts, hemorrhage, shock, organ failure and death (in which case the dosage risks won't matter much anyway).

Be advised 40mgs (4 tabs) of compazine is 4 times the dosage on my bottle and I will not advise someone to do that however, compazine is an anti-psychotic (used to control nausea and vomiting in chemo patients), normal dosage is 10mgs but used as an anti-psychotic dosages can range up to 100mgs - so it most likely won't kill me but high doses can negate the anti-nausea effects and actually cause nausea and vomiting along with permanent muscle spasms so it isn't wise to use it often and the normal dose of phenergan is 25mgs (one suppository). But I hate to puke and if you are puking it is difficult to get the aspirin, grapeseed and curcumin to stay down so it can work.

Life is full of choices and the choices we make determine our destiny. The choices we make when suffering an episode of Acute Pancreatitis can mean the difference between life and death.

    1. That is a great question! Most drugs are based on an average weight of 150 pounds so those who weigh less or more should consider adjusting amounts, if you are asking about Ibuprofen and aspirin. The supplements are different because grape seed extract, curcumin and vit C are all non-toxic.

    1. Pumla has he been diagnosed with pancreatitis? If he doesn't have it all you can do is to help him protect his pancreas with unsweetened white grapefruit juice, grape seed extract and curcumin. That may help but he definitely needs to quit drinking if he has been diagnosed with pancreatitis.

  4. I got diagnosed like two months ago and I went out Thursday and Friday and had a bit to drink now I'm I'm bed feeling the same pain I felt when it first happened but it's not as bad, should I go to hospital?

    1. Yes you should go to the hospital. IF you are having another acute pancreatitis attack it can become life threatening very fast. You NEED to quit drinking. Didn't your doctor tell you to quit drinking alcohol? If he/she didn't they should be shot but if they did tell you and you drank anyway you may want to consider getting your head examined while you are at the ER.

  5. Hi, just found your site, good factual information and references. Just bought these two supp's. The Turmeric says not to take if you have Bile duct obstruction, and the Grape seed says consult a physician if you are taking nsaid's or things that affect platelet aggregation. I'm currently taking three 800 mg Motrins on a daily basis (3 weeks now) for the familiar dull back pain. I've had CP for 2 years now (doc said probably CP) ultrasound showed panc. inflammation. This is the first time the pain has reared up WITHOUT drinking and doesn't seem to be subsiding. Will start following the zero fat diet as best I can, and want to start the turmeric and grape seed. Was just wondering about the warnings. Thanks, Darrell

    1. Hey Darrell, thanks for visiting my pancreatitis blog. Curcumin or turmeric causes the bile to flow so those with duct blockage or gallstones could have some problems and should probably avoid curcumin. If you do not have either you should be fine. There is always a chance of some weird thing happening but i have never heard of anyone dying from curcumin/turmeric.

Grape seed extract can thin the blood a bit. Actually it helps platelets to not stick which is a good thing unless you have a bleeding disorder or are on anticoagulants.

I personally have taken boatloads of grape seed extract, not at one time but over the last 18 years. I have taken it with Motrin (800mg tabs), with Advil (same thing as Motrin) both are Ibuprofen. I have taken it with aspirin. I am still alive and kicking.

I have taken grape seed extract with curcumin, vitamin C and grapefruit juice. I think it is safe but like I said anything can happen. Whatever can go wrong will, especially when drugs are involved.

    2. Hey HG, thanks for responding, I stopped the motrin and I've been taking the curc(3xday) and GSE(2xday) since my first note to you. I have to say that I'm optimistic with the results. I'm still trying to follow the zero-low fat diet (very difficult). 1 slice of pizza bit me (low level dull pain now for 2 days, feels like pressure) (i'm probably lucky,(so far)when i read of other sufferers painful attacks). I'm drinking GF juice as well. Wish me luck. I'll be buying my next supps from your website. Any problems with the daily regimen of supps I'm taking long term? I'm hoping to get to a point where I don't need them at all. Any single book for panc diet that you recommend? Thanks again.

    3. Hey Darrell - I only took/take motrin when an acute pancreatitis attack hits. Thankfully that hasn't been for about 5-6 years now and that last one was the first in maybe 20? Anyway ...

Like I said I personally take my cocktail (Ibuprofen, grape seed extract, curcumin and vit C) when I have needed it and thankfully, like I said I haven't needed it in years but ...

I did NOT suffer any side effects from the cocktail. In regards to the daily regimen of grape seed extract, curcumin, vit c, panc enzymes, and and multi vit/min formula I have never had any side effects. I have never read about any side effects with curcumin. Vit C in large doses causes diarrhea in some people but it didn't bother me and I have taken upto 10,000 milligrams in a day for 30 days to see what it would do. One cool benefit? When others were getting colds, flu and other bugs I was fine :-) Their is conflicting reports on grape seed extract in regards to one side effect. Researchers at UC Davis found grape seed lowers blood pressure yet some people claim it increases blood pressure. I have never had a problem with it. Now ...

Short term grape seed and other antioxidants can cause flu like symptoms (nausea etc) when taken in large doses when starting out because it is an EXTREMELY powerful anitoxidant and cleanses the body of toxic waste - if someone is toxic the quick removal of that waste can make people sick and that is why I have said to start out slow, using a low dose and working up when first using it.

You have found the hard way that pizza doesn't work. It is way to greasy and of course the fat content is very high even if it is only a veggie pizza.

I do NOT recommend ANY book regarding a pancreatitis diet. Most I have browsed are so wrong it is pathetic. They are dangerous.

I don't recommend chats or support groups either for after being a member of 5 or more I have found they are nothing but blind, sick people leading more sick people who continue to be sick because they follow advice from those who are still sick. To me, my opinion is that taking medical/health advice which is what is being given in support groups from sick people is like taking financial advice from your Uncle or friend who has gone bankrupt 3 or 4 times and lives on welfare. It doesn't make good sense. I have also found that in most cases doctors and nutritionists are just as blind and dumb when it comes to pancreatitis. And please understand ...

I am NOT trying to be arrogant or mean. I have simply found from experience that what I just said is true in most cases.

Eat anti-inflammatory food (veggies and fruit) with moderate amounts of whole grains, usually SAFE meats(skinless chicken, turkey, quail, rabbit, squirrel) and fish. DO NOT cook stuff in any kind of oil/butter/margarine and make sure you cook any of the usually safe meat so that the FAT runs off and away.

Egg whites are an awesome and safe source of protein. High protein content, ZERO fat.

Be careful of dairy products and products that contain dairy because even fat free may not be fat free- remember labels LIE so don't believe everything that is on a label. INGREDIENTS don't lie. IF something contains pork or beef it isn't gonna work.

      Good luck Darrell!

  6. Hello
i had my first attack a month ago,10 days in hospital they said part of my pancreas has died

yes i was a heavy drinker but i found a nectarine bought on the attack

i had two previous pains in the area after eating nectarines 2 months earlier

my wife says im full of s##t she said the beer started it

    what do you think

    thanking you

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi there anonymous, sorry to hear you are not doing so well and ...

I have to think your wife is correct for two reasons:

      1) I eat nectarines by the bag full when they are in season with absolutely no problems in fact, nectarines, peaches, apricots along with other fruits are FULL of pancreas friendly, anti-inflammatory polyphenol flavonoids.

      2) Alcohol on the other hand is a whole different story. Whether it's beer, wine, burbon, or another product that contains alcohol such as vinilla extract or some cold/cough syrup formulas it, alchol, it extremely toxic to a damaged pancreas or to the pancreas of a human that contains the genetic DNA variant that has been found cause or contribute to alcoholic pancreatitis. So ...

Sorry dude I doubt it was the nectarine and would vote for the beer. And ...

Since you have had necrotic tissue (the dead part of your pancreas) you are most likely going to have chronic pancreatitis and chronic pancreatitis in those who have had acute pancreatitis due to alcohol often develop clacification which means their pancreas literally starts turning into bone.

How does that future vision sound to you? So, since calcification usually progresses most rapidily in those who do NOT quit drinking it may be very beneficial to you to consider your future the next time you feel "thirsty." In fact ...

Should you opt to keep drinking my advice would be to visit your cemetary of choice and pick out your permanent home.

I can't be more blunt so I hope you make the right choice.

Nearly 3 months on and NO drinkies for me,lots of ice cream (need the sugar)

    3. You do know that ice cream is full of fat and that fat is the major enemy, other than alcohol, right? Ice cream is also full of sugar which could be causing your "almost black outs" due to sugar spikes and dumps.

If you are not eating well and most pancreatitis people have difficulty eating properly - consuming large amounts of sugar (ice cream) would most likely cause serious spikes in blood sugar and tremendous dumps (hypoglycemia) which can actually cause death if the condition is serious enough.

I'd knock off the sugar and the ice cream could cause your next AP and if you do stop eating bad crap you may begin to feel better but that is just my 2 cents worth.

  7. Thanks for the reply Health guy

But the only crap I eat is 97%fat free ice cream other than that my diet isnt too bad

i dont eat fried food or take away very often if at all

i cut the fat off any meat my wife cooks and i eat lots of vegies

if i have soft drink i try to get zero coke

so now im going to try to get off the ice cream

im having sugar withdrawls because of not drinking alcohol

    thanks for your help

    1. Hey I didn't mean to sound like I was scolding you. The fact you have been alcohol free for 3 months after being a heavy drinker is an outstanding accomplishment.

Unfortunately those with pancreas damage simply can not tolerate the foods we would like to eat. Which brings me to the meat. What kind of meat do you eat? IF it's RED meat, pork or lamb it ain't good; whether you cut the fat off or not because the fat is marbled all through the meat and those foods simply don't work. They don't work even after someone has healed.

      Are you diabetic?

  8. Thanks for info! Will this helpful for chronic pain caused by the chronic pancreatic? Is your pain chronic or it comes sometimes only ?

    1. Yes - the whole idea is to eliminate the inflammation and ANYTHING (food and alcohol) that causes inflammation.

Chronic pancreatitis pain (unless it is an acute episode) usually doesn't need 800 mgs of ibuprofen but large doses of grape seed extract, curcumin and vit C will be extremely beneficial.

I've been pain free for years. I do what I share and for me it works.

  9. Thanks for your reply! I have started grape seed extract, Vit C and curcumin from last 2 weeks. I don't take alcohol. How long does it took for you to bring down the pain with these supplements ?

    1. How long did it take initially for me? It was so long ago I don't remember.

How long it will take for you?

      I don't know.

Start out slow in doses and increase. Keep increasing until you experience results and then STAY at that level for at least 6 months.

Once you are healed you can cut the doses in half and most likely still be fine.

My brother is a heavy drinker and has acute pancreatitis i am gonna be having him stay with me to quit drinking he needs support from me and my hubby so i wanted to know how do i start him off on the grape seed extract and the curcumin and vitamin c . I need the milligrams of each and how many times a day to take it.. Any Help will be helpful..

God Bless and Thank You Greatly..

    Replies
    1. I started off with hefty doses but I don't suggest that for others cuz some folks get some unpleasant symptoms when first starting with antioxidants due to the "cleansing" effect.

How to start the supplements is already listed in several posts. I hate to keep repeating myself.

For grape seed, curcumin and vit C start out slow and work up til symptoms resolve. Stay at the resolution level for at least six months and then he should be able to cut the doses in half and keep the benefit.

Enzymes are different. I started with one at each meal, found I needed two. To much enzymes can be as bad as none so don't over do it.

Good luck, hope your brother gets well.

    1. The OPC's (Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins) found in various fruits (grapes), vegetables, peanut skins are truly powerful flavonoids that perform nothing less than what may be deemed as miracles.

Grape seed extract has the highest concentration of OPC's available in an easy to take form. I'm glad you too have had such great success! Thanks for sharing :-)

  12. Just a side note to people, like my son, who may have a reaction to Compazine. His doctor prescribed it for stomach problems when he was in middle school. After taking it for about a week, he developed uncontrolled muscle spasms at school one day. The school nurse called me freaking out because she thought he had meningitis. I rushed him to his doctor and it turned out he was having an adverse reaction to the Compazine. The reaction is called Tardive Dyskinesia. The doctor administered Benadryl to counter the effects of the Compazine, waited until the spasms subsided, and then sent us home with the order to never take Compazine again. All was well until the Benadryl wore off that night and the spasms started up again. We rushed our son to the emergency room and the doctor researched the half-life of Compazine and gave our son medication to counter the effects of the drug until it had completely metabolized out of his system. That worked and he has never had a recurrence, but he is careful to let every doctor he goes to know that he is allergic to Compazine. It was one of the scariest experiences I have ever had with one of my children and I thought your readers should know that there is a possibility of developing Tardive Dyskinesia while taking Compazine if your body is sensitive to it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. you are correct. Thanks for mentioning Tardive Dyskinesia. It is real common but it does happen and can become permanent with antisychotic drugs.

Compazine (prochlorperazine) is a phenothiazine derivative. Phenergan (promethazine) can have the same side effect as compazine.

  13. Just wanted to share my story and get some insight. I was a heavy drinker for many years, and I guess it finally caught up with me. I had my first episode of what I think was acute pancreatitis four months ago a couple days after binging on new year's. I had pain under the rib cage and radiating to my back. There was no fever or nausea, just the pain. I did some research and went to the doctor, but wasn't able to be diagnosed with the disease. Never the less, it's been four months and I haven't drank any alcohol and never plan to again. I have been eating healthy with lots of fruits and vegetables, but I didn't think about the fat content of my food. I have been eating dairy and meat. Yesterday I had another episode after a couple of days of eating some pizza, fast food and not drinking very much water. My pain has never been bad enough that I've gone to the hospital, but it's there. I'm afraid that the damage being done is going to shorten my life considerably. I'm turning 35 in a week. I'm going to go to the health food store tomorrow and purchase the supplements you suggest. I don't know what else to do. I'll cut out the fat too, whatever it take to stop the pain. Thanks for the info, I really hope it turns out to be beneficial.

    1. Well Craig, I can't diagnose but you may have had a mild acute attack or at least a BIG warning of what may come so you are definitely going about things the right way except - you should go into the er or see your doc to get diagnosed. It could be gallstones. It could be anything but it does sound like pancreatitis even though your pain wasn't severe. Believe it or not some people don't have pain! They just puke a lot. It's rare but a fact. Anyway ...

If you are still symptomatic I'd go in an get checked out. A firm diagnosis would be helpful so you know what it actually is that is troubling you. Good luck!

He was diagnosed in the hospital, but after five days they only gave us the same basic info I found on Google in the first 10 minutes I searched. Your site is the only thing that made any sense. He is now trying to travel back home and another acute attack is starting. He is taking aspirin & Vitamin C, cannot get to the other supps right now. What else can he do? The white grapefruit juice?

    1. You are very welcome. I'm sorry to hear about your husband. Glad he pulled through! 800 mgs of Ibuprofen would be better but aspirin works almost as well. Four (4) 325 mg aspirin at once. White, unsweetened grapefruit juice may also help but it is usually best to eat nothing and drink only to stay hydrated during an actual attack. I hope he feels better fast.
